Demand is high for property in one of Cape Town's most prestigious suburbs - Bishopscourt

Category Press - News

Bishopscourt is a small, affluent residential suburb in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town that is enviably positioned - nestled against the slopes of Table Mountain, and bordering the world-famous Kirstenbosch Gardens.

The suburb got its name from the residence of the Bishop of the Church of England of South Africa, which was built in the 1850s by the first Bishop of Cape Town. The property was established on the farm known as Boscheuwel, which was originally owned by Jan van Riebeek.

This rich history makes Bishopscourt one of the oldest suburbs in Cape Town. Today, the highly sought-after residential node is defined by luxurious, expansive homes owned by business executives, families, and various local and international celebrities, personalities and ambassadorial diplomats - who are drawn to the beautiful leafy streets, majestic views, established large grounds, and grand homes, as well as the areas proximity to good schools and the nearby amenities of Cavendish, Wynberg and Newlands. Plus, the University of Cape Town is close, and a trip to the CBD of Cape Town takes just 15 minutes and Cape Town International Airport and the beaches of False Bay are 20 minutes away.

Sought-after by the elite, Bishopscourt comprises some of the most valuable and exclusive real estate in South Africa. In 2015, it was ranked the sixth richest suburb in South Africa.

According to Alexa Horne, Managing Director of DG Properties, Bishopscourt has retained its property values - market regardless - due to the demand for property here being well in excess of supply.

"For all the reasons listed above, Bishopscourt remains one of the most in-demand suburbs and continues to enjoy robust sales. In the past 12 months alone, DG has concluded six high-worth sales in Bishopscourt with a collective sales value of R178 million," explains Horne. This represents roughly 70% of the total market share in Bishopscourt.

Trophy residences currently for sale in Bishopscourt through DG include a spectacular 818m2  ivy-clad grande-dame four-bedroom home with a separate three-bedroom guest house on 4711 square metres of land for R45 million (no transfer duty); a colossal 1500m2  eight-bedroomed home on 5 586 square metres of land also for R45 million; an expansive 1006 m2 eight-bedroom, eight-bathroom home on 12 270 square metres of land, which is just a stone's throw away from Kirstenbosch for R50 million; a four-bedroom chandeliered and marble floored home with heated pool and jacuzzi for R30 million on 3005 square metres of land; and a four-bedroom, four-bathroom family home on 4 155 square metres of land for R19,9 million.

As can be seen by the available properties, homes in Bishopscourt are large and set on expansive grounds with beautiful gardens and views. Residents enjoy a sense of openness and privacy - very much a part of the allure of this wonderful suburb.

"Bishopscourt lies at the top of the Constantia Valley. With its tree-lined lanes, swathes of greenbelt and open stretches of land, the Constantia Valley includes some of the most desirable property in Cape Town as is indicated by the prices and demand. This is an area of large gardens, mature trees, mountain streams and vineyards. The various greenbelts provide a network of trails, perfect for horse riding, mountain biking, running and walking, and you're never too far from stunning views of the mountains and surrounding greenery. It's sheltered from the worst of the wind and the views are fantastic, looking straight up at the mountain or out over False Bay. For all these reasons and more it is little wonder that young and old alike covet property in this prestigious suburb," concludes Horne.
